A heat pump takes heat out of the outside air and moves it into your house, and it carries on doing that when it is cold outside, because there is still heat in cold air to move.

The objection we hear most is that they do not work in winter. They do, but the reason people believe otherwise is worth understanding. A gas boiler blasts very hot water round the radiators in short bursts. A heat pump runs cooler water through bigger radiators for longer, so the house sits at a steady temperature rather than swinging up and down. Put a heat pump on radiators sized for boiler temperatures and the house will feel underwhelming, and the heat pump will get the blame. Size the radiators for the water temperature the heat pump is designed to run at and it will not.

Which leads to the second point, and it is the honest reason to care who installs it: the design matters more than the badge on the box. The heat loss survey, the radiator sizing, the flow temperature and the controls decide whether you are warm and whether the running cost makes sense. That is the part a certified installer is being paid for.

What affects the price

We will not put a number on this page. A heat pump is priced off the heat loss of your particular house, and two houses on the same street can need very different systems depending on insulation, radiators and where the outdoor unit can sensibly go. The survey is what produces a real figure, and the grant is applied on top of it, so the number that matters is the one after both. All of that is in writing before you decide anything.

Questions we get asked

Yes, if it is designed for your house. A heat pump works by moving heat rather than burning fuel, and there is still heat in cold air for it to move, so low outdoor temperatures do not stop it working. What it does differently is run cooler water for longer instead of very hot water in short bursts, which means the radiators have to be big enough to give out the heat at that lower temperature. Get that right and the house sits at a steady temperature all winter. Get it wrong and the system will struggle, which is where most of the bad stories come from.
