Modern air conditioning is a heat pump: it moves heat around rather than burning anything to make it, and it runs both ways. The same unit that cools the bedroom in July will warm it in February, usually for less than people expect. We size the system to the room rather than selling you the biggest unit we can, because an oversized unit costs more to buy, more to run, and is noisier with it.

It depends almost entirely on two things: how long you run it, and whether it was sized properly for the room. A unit that is the right size reaches the temperature you asked for and then ticks over, while an oversized one keeps starting and stopping and costs you more to do the same job. Run as a heater in winter it is usually cheaper per unit of heat than direct electric heating, because it moves heat rather than making it. We would rather talk the running cost through honestly at survey than print a figure here that would not match your house.
In most cases, no. Domestic outdoor units normally fall under permitted development in England provided they meet the conditions on size, siting and noise, but that changes if you are in a listed building, a conservation area, or a flat. We check what applies to your property at survey and tell you plainly if an application is needed before we quote.
Indoors, a modern wall unit on a low fan speed is quiet enough that most people stop noticing it within a day or two. Outdoors, the condenser makes a low hum you would hear standing beside it and rarely notice from inside the house. Where we put it matters more than which unit you buy, so we site it away from bedroom windows and boundaries wherever the pipe run allows.
Yes, and it is the part most people do not expect. Air conditioning is a heat pump, so running it in reverse gives you heating from the same unit you cool with. It works room by room rather than replacing a whole central heating system, so it suits a cold home office or a chilly extension better than it suits an entire house. If you want to heat the whole property, an air source heat pump is the honest answer, and we fit those too.
A single room is normally a one-day job. Three or four rooms on a multi split usually take two to three days, depending on how far the pipework has to travel and whether it can be hidden.
